Coding into the Void

A blog that I’ll probably forget about after making thirty-six posts.

2025 Goal: Repeating an Old Mistake

Well, it’s that time again. Setting new goals. I fell far short of last year’s goals, lacking the drive to go onto bigger projects.

My goal, in a return to 2021’s form, is to make one big game. I’d consider Champions of Shond to be the lower bound for the size I want to make. There are a few that I have in mind (including Menagerie), but I’m not going to nail down which one.

I anticipate the biggest obstacle will be art, as that’s been a big blocker for my previous progress. I do anticipate working on many smaller games throughout the year, as I’m already working on one, but the one main goal is the big one.

What In-Progress Games Would Count

  • Fighter’s Guild
  • Four Block Drop Gaiden
  • HodgePodge
  • LowRezExplorer
  • Menageries
  • Space Cards
  • Time Loop
  • Unstarted 3D Platformer
  • Maybe some other games I’m forgetting

Examples of What Wouldn’t Count

  • Sacrifice Game
  • PushPull
  • Relics

I want to make four games with year, with at least two of those being games that are currently in progress. Let’s do a new quick run-through of the biggest targets for in-progress games.

A Bonus?

I’d like to set up an infrastructure for making short games quickly, maybe for a game a week project. The unstarted 3D platformer is a gateway to that, as it would involve using 2D sprites in a 3D world so that I could play around with having more people in the space. I don’t know if my motivation for that will last into next year, but it’s a compelling idea, even if I think I won’t be able to bring myself to release games at the quality they’d have to be with the amount of time I have.

We’ll see!

But Wait…

In some ways, this is a continuation of my 2024 goal. I wanted to work on making bigger games. I didn’t. At all. Maybe I will this year, or maybe I’ll end up turning away from this goal entirely. Will it work? Who knows. Short post.
